IS OUR BREAD READY YET?
Performance by Imane Zoubai
Imane Zoubai is a visual artist whose practice revolves around ancestral (especially women's) musical practices and their relationship to land in her region of origin, Chragua (in the Rif foothills, north west of Fes). Her work looks to translate music into visual and performed art. She breaks down Chergui ritual, music and orality into "grains" for etymologically, in popular Moroccan expression one "plants a verse" and "plays a grain." "Is Our Bread Ready Yet?" is one of the performances Imane has developed around the songs women sing while preparing bread, using her body, jingling with bracelets, to lay out a landscape of soil, flour and shiny beads in the process.
