Our mission is to support the emergence of a thriving documentary society, culture and practice in and from the Arab world while promoting the values and principles of justice, dignity and human rights.
The first cycle of DOX Garage was launched in September 9th 2019. Nine applications were received from the following countries: Egypt (3), Libya, Morocco (3), Rowanda, Norway.
Topics of submitted projects ranged from ecological, Historical and socio-political. The following is the selection and grants decision:
1. Mirit Mikhale – Drinking Fog – Egypt and France. Was awarded a consultation meeting with a dramaturg to advise on the nuances of the story, tone of voice and Point of view.
2. Mohamed Msahel – The Princess and the Dragon – Morocco. Was awarded a consultation meeting with an animation expert to advise on technique and story board
3. Yasmine Benabdallah – Body here, Mind elsewhere – Morocco. Was awarded a consultation meeting with a dramaturg to advise on the nuances of the story, tone of voice and Point of view.
4. Reda Zerouali – Kalima – Morocco. Was awarded a consultation meeting (virtual) with a filmmaker / archive expert to advise on archival material employment within the story .
5. Mohamed Adel – Aswan, The Synagogue – Egypt. Was awarded a consultancy meeting with a lawyer to advise on permits and production legal matters and a consultancy session with a consultant to advise on structure.
6.Amjad Said Haboush – The lost Jews of Nafusa Mountains – Libya. Was awarded a consultation meeting with a DOX BOX staff member to advise on future workshop and lab opportunities for the project
Cycle 2 was launched on 02 March, 2020. During the second session, 11 applications were received from the following countries:
Palestine (1), Egypt (3), Iraq (1), Jordan (2), Lebanon (1), Tunisia(1).
And 7 projects were awarded consultations as follows:
1. Moyed Al Raqeeb – Pigeons – Jordan – awarded consultation meetings with story experts to advise on the nuances of the story, tone of voice and point of view.
2. Zeina Sfeir – Waiting For the Train – Lebanon – awarded consultation meetings with story experts to advise on the nuances of the story, tone of voice and point of view.
3. Ahmed Nabil – Marika – Egypt – awarded consultation meetings with story experts to advise on the nuances of the story, tone of voice and point of view.
4. Rand Beiruty -Tell Them About Us – Jordan – awarded a consultation meeting (virtual) with a producer / filmmaker to advise on the film file and the trailer.
5. Lana Daher – Do You Love Me – Lebanon – awarded consultation meetings (virtual) with topical archive experts to advise on method and process.
6. Lina Soueilam – Bye Bye Tiberias – Palestine – awarded consultation meetings (virtual) with topical archive experts to advise on method and process
7. Nada Rezq – Greetings to The Happy Gatherings – Egypt – awarded a consultation meeting with a lawyer to advise on production legal matters and rights
The 2020 fall cycle of DOX Garage was just concluded, making it the third cycle of the program.
This cycle was launched on the 15th of September 2020, and the open call lasted for the duration of 2 weeks. During which, 12 applications from 4 different countries were received as follows: Egypt (4), Jordan (2), Morocco (5), Lebanon (1) Syria (1).
The topics of the documentary projects submitted were largely sociopolitical, reflecting on themes such as relocation, exile, religion and societal traditions.
This cycle, six projects were officially selected to be matched with expert consultants to advise on specific predicaments faced by each project. In addition to this official selection, DOX BOX extended exceptional support to three more projects in the form of a specifically designed masterclass titled: “Moving From Development to Production “
The complete list of grantees is as follows:
1. Mohamed Zeinnedine – Jump The Wall – Morocco. Was awarded a consultation meeting with an archive expert to advise on practical steps regarding the archive used in the film project
2. Mustafa Haid – Exile (or Alzheimer’s) – Syria. Was awarded a consultation meeting with a story expert to advise on the story line of the film.
3. Rim Mejdi – Spiritual Diaries – Morocco. Was awarded a consultation meeting (virtual) with an editor or a dramaturg to consult on the rough cut of the film.
4. Walid Abdelnour – The Red Dot – Lebanon. Was awarded a consultation meeting with a distributor to advise on the roughcut, the sales strategy and film file.
5. Mohamed Andaloussi and Hicham Bajjou – Generation Boulevard – Morocco. Were awarded a consultation meeting with a distributor to advise on the roughcut, the sales strategy and film file.
6. Nabil Merrouch – High Temperature – Morocco. Was awarded a consultation meeting with an expert to advise on the story line and the characters.
Masterclass Participants:
The call for the 2021 Winter Cycle has been concluded on February 15th. Where a total of 6 project applications have been received from the following countries.
Egypt (2), Morocco (1), , Palestine (1), Sudan (1), Tunis (1).
Three projects were awarded the consultancy sessions. Below are the names of the filmmakers and projects awarded.
Laura Stauth – Between Two Walls – Egypt – was awarded consultancy sessions with an editor/dramaturge to advise on the structure of the story.
Mohamed Msahel – The Ghost Conqueror – Morocco – was awarded a consultancy session with a director to advise on technicalities of the film project.
Ghada Terawi – The Forgotten – Palestine – was awarded consultancy sessions with an editor/dramaturge to advise on the structure of the story.
The call for the DOX Garage Summer 2021 cycle has been concluded on July 6th, 2021 A total of 7 applications were received from 6 countries, namely, Algeria (1), Egypt (1), Iraq (2), Morocco (1), Sudan (1), Syria (1).
Four projects were awarded the consultancy, as follows:
La Vache et la Penalty by Taher Kessi (Morocco) – was awarded a consultation meeting with a filmmaker – dramaturge
to advise on the story structure, and angle after watching your rough cut.
My Everyday Panic by Sameh Estaphanous (Egypt) – was awarded a consultation meeting with a producer / impact producer
to advise on the financing plan of the film.
Becoming Omar Khairy by Alyaa Sir (Sudan) – was awarded a consultation with an archive expert
to advise on employment of material.
Mohsen of Iraq by Ishtar Yasin (Iraq) – was awarded a consultation meeting with a dramaturg
to advise on the story structure, and angle.
The call for the winter 2021-2022 cycle was concluded on the 31st of October. 10 projects were received from 3 countries, namely , Algeria (1) Egypt (7) and Lebanon (1).

meeting (virtual) with a Producer to consult you on how to make alliances and map co-
production partners.
Beautiful Nights. By Mohamed Omar (Egypt). Was awarded a consultation meeting
(virtual) with a Filmmaker/Producer to consult on how to proceed with the research and
production stage of your film project.
Fragile. By Sally Aboubasha (Egypt). Was awarded a consultation meeting with a
Filmmaker/Producer to consult you on how to proceed with the relationship management
and production stage of your film project
The Photographs. By Salma Olama (Egypt). Was awarded a consultation meeting with an
archive expert to consult on how to employ the archival material.
We Can Be Lost. By Manar ElZoheiry (Egypt). Was awarded a consultation meeting
(virtual) with a Filmmaker/Producer to consult you on how to proceed with the production
stage of your film project.
