On Monday, 11 February 2019, French-Egyptian director and producer Jihan El Tahri was announced as the new General Director DOX BOX at a Special Get Together event by the organisation’s Board.

Having started her career as a foreign correspondent covering Middle East Politics, since 1990, El Tahri has directed and produced documentaries for BBC, PBS, Arte and other international broadcasters. Her documentary “Nasser” was part of the official selection at Toronto International Festival 2017. Jihan has produced and directed the acclaimed documentaries “Behind the Rainbow”, “ Cuba, an African Odyssey”, and Emmy-nominated “House of Saud”. Next to being a member of the Academy (AMPAS) documentary section, El Tahri is engaged in various associations and institutions working with African cinema like the Guild of African Filmmakers in the Diaspora, the Federation of Pan African Cinema (FEPACI), and Focus Feature’s Africa first Program, and is a mentor at Documentary Campus. Jihan El Tahri will take over as the new General Director as of March 2019.

At the same occasion, the DOX BOX board and team bade farewell to founder and long-term director Diana El Jeiroudi who is leaving the  management of the organisation. She co-founded DOX BOX International Documentary Film Festival in Syria together with her partner Orwa Nyrabia in 2008. The festival that quickly grew into the region’s most remarkable documentary gathering with screenings all over Syria, was cancelled in 2012 in protest of the Syrian government’s crackdown on protesters during the ongoing Syrian uprising.

In 2014, El Jeiroudi co-founded DOX BOX association together with a group of international experts in Berlin. During the time of her management, she was the driving force behind establishing and building DOX BOX’s new identity, including setting up the organisational structures, strategising and designing the organisation’s various programmes, and building up a remarkable network of international partners, funders and collaborators.

“What DOX BOX achieved in the Arab region and internationally under the leadership of Diana is remarkable, says board member Andrea Kuhn, and continues, “It is sad to see Diana leaving directorship and we will always be grateful for all the passion, creativity and skill she has poured into the organisation. I am confident we have found a new director who will  lead the organisation into a successful future.”

After serving five years as director of DOX BOX in Berlin, El Jeiroudi will now focus on her projects as director and producer. She remains a member of the DOX BOX General Assembly.
